Burning hot glass shrapnel flying everywhere. Thankfully, the poker gods were watching out for us and we were all still standing in the kitchen and no one was sitting at the table. Don't let anyone fool you, poker is a dangerous game.

I busted pretty early because Drew was 2 seats to my left and I felt like he was bullying back at me when I raised him a couple of times. I got 88 on the button and raised 3-4x the BB. He made the patented Drew "All-In" move which he never expects anyone to call, but I put him on 2 big cards and decided to race him down with my 88's and try to double up or at least send a message that he couldn't all-in re-raise me at will. Turns out he did have 2 face cards but they matched, JJ so I was a big underdog. Nothing on the flop. Turn, 8. River, Jack. The classic suck-resuck.

I rebought and doubled back up to $20 fairly soon after when I cracked Jason's Aces. I was in late position again and decided to keep applying pressure so I raised to 60 with J10. Jason re-raised to 120. Russ called so I had to call another 60 to stay in a pot that was now 300. I'm getting 5 to 1 so it's an automatic call. This is why minimum raises make baby Jesus cry. They do nothing to affect your opponent's pot odds. It is an automatic call. The flop came 10-10-x. Jason bet 400, I re-raised all-in and he called. The same thing happened later in the game when Eli min-raised his pocket Kings. I had 99's and called and flopped a set. He went all-in and I called to bust him. I didn't see AA but the one time I had KK I raised it up 4x the BB and took the blinds. Sometimes you have to be happy with that. Better to win a small pot then to lose a big one.

In one painfully memorable hand I violated one of my own basic rules and it cost me a double knockout that would have made me a massive chip leader. I had 10-10 in first position with 3 players behind me. I believe the pre-flop betting was 200 so the pot was 800. The flop came J-7-6 so only one over card. My general rule is to call a reasonable amount to see the turn if there is only 1 overcard and see if I can take it down on the turn. I checked. The 3 players behind me bet and called another 200. I had to call 200 into 1400 so I was getting 7 to 1 but figured I was behind and need another 10 to take the lead in the hand which was basically a 9 to 1 shot (and I was out of position) so I folded. Something was making me very uncomfortable about the 3 players behind me, I figured somebody had an overpair or at a minimum somebody hit the J. I folded, but I didn't feel comfortable about the fold either. I flashed the red 10's to Edy on my left which I almost never do but I guess I wanted a witness to validate that I made a good fold of a decent hand. Turn. Black 10. More betting. River. Black 10. 2 All-ins with a straight and a full house maybe, I don't really remember because I was too stunned seeing my quads fall. It wasn't a horrible fold, but since I would've capped the betting with just 200 more to see the turn I think I should stick with my general "only one overcard take it to the turn" rule.

I managed to grind my way to a slight chip lead with 6 players left just by applying pressure in late position. Sometimes with cards and sometimes not. At one point I dropped the hammer (7-2 offsuit) on Drew and made 400 or so with a full house. He folded on the river but of course I had to show and brag about it for 15 minutes or so...

It all fell apart for me when I was holding Q10 in a 3-way pot with Jason and Drew. The flop came QJ10 so I flopped 2 pair. I didn't put anyone on AK, but I called something like 1500 on the flop with Drew going all-in. Jason went all-in on the turn and I had to fold. He showed the K9 straight, don't remember what Drew had. It was a very expensive hand for me and I should have been able to get away from it. That hand cost me close to half my stack and with 4 left I had a slight lead on John in 4th. He raised All-in from the button. I thought he was full of shit so I called from the SB with KJ. He had Q7 and the flop came KQx. Turn. Blank. River. Q. Nice, the second time tonight I've been two-outted on the river. (of course the first time I had two-outted on the turn to take the lead but hell, it's still no fun...) That was pretty much it for me. The blinds were 300-600 and I tried to rally but it didn't happen.

I hate 4th. I played pretty strong though and just got unlucky in a couple of spots. I think the lessons learned for tonight are 1) pick a better spot than 88 to fight back if you feel like someone is being a bully. 2) call the flop if the pot odds are close and there is only 1 overcard to your pocket pair, even if you are out of position there's a lot of opportunity to maneuver and take it down on the turn, or get lucky and hit runner-runner quads ;) and 3) flopping 2-pair but on a dangerous board with a 3-way pot is often a good time to fold.

MTT Win - Bodog $100k guaranteed semi-final

I just spent 4 hours outlasting a field of 140 other players to win a $24 tournament entry token off a $2 buy-in. It was good to make a MTT final table because I haven't in a while, but it was not an entirely productive use of my time. (My wife would question if poker is ever a "productive" use of my time.) Hopefully I can turn this $24 into a seat in the $100k finals which I haven't played in before, but I really need to put some more thought into which MTT's I want to invest the time to play. I read a good article that said you should try to play the same one on the same site every night and try to familiarize yourself with some of the regulars.

Bodog +$24 tournament entry token

Gift to the Guido fund

I played a cash game tonight at Crazy Paul's. First off, I wasn't too thrilled about the rake. $75 buy-in, $1/$2 blinds and the rake is capped at $6. Every big pot the dealer is taking $6 off the table. In the first hour plus the dealer has already raked $75 which is not exactly what I call a friendly cash game. Crazy Paul said it was to cover the pizza and the beer, but I didn't eat your damn pizza or drink your damn beer. You can spend your rake on whatever the hell you please but it still has to be fair to the table and I think $3 should have been the cap.

Now that I've gotten that vent out of the way. I should be coming home ahead $50 or $75. Instead I'm busted and I hope I learned something. I played great all night, folding trouble hands like KJ out of position, taking almost every small and medium pot I was in and at one point finding myself at $150. Super, I'll just wait for AA or KK and fold everything else and make a little profit and go home happy. Instead, I decide to go up against this fucking Guido on a massive hot streak. He looks like Jose Canseco and his girlfriend is playing to his left with a "Got Milk" T-Shirt and an IQ of about 12. I pick up A7 out of position and decide to play. The flop comes AKK. I bet $20 to find out if he has an A or K. I'm becoming less concerned about my kicker at this point. He calls. The turn comes a J. OK, either he has a K and has me beat or my kicker doesn't play and I'm fine. I bet another $20. He smooth calls. The river comes another Jack. I've been pushing hard, making it seem like I've got the nuts and I'm not afraid so I immediately say "All In". He calls again and shows AQ. He says "You got lucky bro." and the dealer starts splitting up the chips. Then some little shit who's not even in the hand says "Wait, he's got AA and KK with Q kicker. He wins." The little shit is right. I don't like to cheat but for some reason this still pisses me off. If both the players in the hand think it's a chop and the dealer is dividing up the chips I think you should just keep your goddamn mouth shut.

Maybe after 4 or 5 beers I just get retarded. There were a lot of hands that could have beaten me but I didn't slow down to think about it. Any K or any J or AQ. He had the AQ and I paid for my stupidity. I still had $10 in my wallet so I said what the hell... If I'm going to go broke, I'm going to go broke and bought back in. I waited a few hands and raised all-in with AK and Guido called with Q7 and hit a straight to the 9. Guido's "Got Milk" girlfriend had busted Dave earlier with AA so we drove home penniless and pissed off. Ouch, that hurt. I hope I learn something from this... I'm not all that experienced in cash games and I'm sure if I play more of them I will need to learn more of this kind of lesson. Dave and I both agreed that as the night went on, we both reverted to our normal tournament style and it cost us dearly.

Tomorrow I will be 29. Yippee.
-$85.00. I started out pretty hot, busting Wes with a straight followed by a full house and Boston Paul with 2 pair to get up to 2400 or so... Then I went into idiot mode and gave away a ton of my chips chasing cards. I pretty much just threw pot odds out the window and lost in 3 pots where I called big bets on the turn with 2 over cards and a flush draw. Instead of applying pressure with my big stack, I was gambling with it. The first time I called Jason with a A9 spades with 8 high on the board. 15 outs I told myself. I figured Jason just had a pair so any spade, A, or 9 would do it. The 9 hits but Jason has 2 pair. Damn. That'll teach me right? Nope, did the same thing again with AK suited and J10 suited, 2 over cards and the flush draw and all the sudden I'm left with a little stack of green chips (25). "Give it away, give it away, give it away now..."

I'm down to 225 and the blinds are 50/100 and I managed to triple up. I got a little breathing room but then the blinds go up to 100/200 and I'm back down to 350. I've been chasing all night and at this point I finally fold an open ended straight draw that hits on the River. Damn. If you're going to play like an idiot at least stick with it! So now I'm the big blind and I make it known that my extra 150 is going on top of the 200 and I'm all in. Don't look at my cards. Why would I? 2 callers, K-10-J-7-4 on the board and the best anybody has is a pair of 7's. I draw out the process for the dramatic effect. "Which card should I look at first?" Shuffle them around and turn over the A. Second one, Q. Hit the straight and back in business. After that I flop a straight and double up again and then knocked out Mic when he went all in on the turn because I slow played the nut flush (buh-bye sucka). Down to the final 3 with Jason and Canada Mike. I took the chip lead from Jason at one point when the flop came 853 and I bet about 1500, and he raised me all-in another 1500. I called with 89 - top pair 8's, he had 84. From 350 chips to 7000 in a little over an hour... I could come back from the dead to win this thing!

The blinds are 300-600. I catch AJ offsuit in the small blind and raise Jason up 1500 so the pot is now 2700. He raises it All-In another 2400 and I didn't even really hesitate when I called because I had a chance to bust him and still have about 1800 chips left. He turns over QQ and I now know I am about 30%. The pot odds were pretty much dead on to call, but it was a poor decision. I guess in a way Jason's table image of being ultra-aggressive at the end of a game probably induced the quick call from me without much thought. After all, he had just doubled me up to the chip lead with top pair, no kicker. Had I caught him again or had the Ace hit for me I would probably be thinking it was a brilliant move but as punishment I will now read my "Note to Self" immediately below this 10 times. I managed to bust Canada Mike when we were both forced to go all in but I had nothing to work with heads up. Any night I can bust Mic is a good night... a massive comeback to win money is just gravy.

Note to self

Do not gamble by calling an All-in raise with AQ or AJ suited unless you have a read that the raiser is loose or you have a major chip advantage. I lost about 300 or so pretty quick with AQ. I could've saved the rest of my chips if I went with the correct read that I had on Ryan next to me on an early hand. I had QQ and raised it up a good little bit and he called. 2 players and the flop comes KKx. I bet to find out where I was at and he doubled it. OK. Clue #1, this guy is not a very sophisticated player so I figure he's either got the King (and shouldn't be re-raising me on the flop) or he's got something like AQ or AJ that he thinks is pretty strong at this point and is attempting to either bluff me out or put more money into a pot that he thinks he is leading. I think for a while and ask him to count his chips. His hand is shaking like crazy. Mystery solved. The guy has a king. I still haven't read any of the books on Poker Tells, but I know that people usually aren't as shaky if they're bluffing. A little bit of fear doesn't make an amateur shake as much as a whole lot of excitement about winning a huge pot. I could've saved 500 chips but at that point I decided to go All-in and at least make sure I saw his cards. (Big slick right? Nope, K6 or some shit like that.) It was a really stupid call on my part, but with $5 re-buys it was a pretty cheap lesson in reading the way the guy handled his chips. I will definitely use it against him in the future. As usual in recent games, I busted out with the better hand in a 60/40. I was shortstacked in 6th position and went All-in and lost A4suited against Drew's K10 offsuit.

Online Wed/Thurs
I went on a huge run at UltimateBet. Ran my $10 up to $60 playing $1 and then $5 SNG's. Part of it was just a ridiculous run of good cards. One game I had AA 4 times in the same game and even managed to lose that particular one. Nice! I also took 2nd in a 18 person $6+.50 Turbo at PokerStars.
UltimateBet +$50.00
PokerStars +$25.00

JPP Friday - 3rd/11 + $10.00
I finished 3rd tonight which was nice because I had been in a slump for over a month. I would've had a better shot at 1st or 2nd if I didn't lose a big pot just before the end of the re-buys. I took a calculated risk to try to become the monster stack at the table and it didn't work out, but I'm still convinced it was a good play. I raised the 50BB to 200 in early position with A6 hearts. I was pushing a little because I had a biggish stack and I figured I could get the smaller stacks involved with some marginal hands because they could still re-buy. Eli raised all-in behind me for an additional ~300 and John called the 500 which left him with about 600. If John had gone all-in to push me out I would've folded, but at this point I was getting a good price to see the flop. 300 to win ~1200 and the other opponent still in can't take me out. The flop came Kxx with 2 hearts. So now I know that unless I'm up against AA, KK, or Ax I am basically even money to win this pot. I didn't really put Eli on a monster hand because he was so short-stacked, and I didn't really think John was either because he called and didn't immediately risk all his trips to try to double up off of me. He was first to act, and raised me all-in for another 600. The ONLY flop I would've called him on was 2 hearts. That's it. I got the flop I was gambling to get (well, 3 would've been nice) so at worst I have a 33% chance to win now. 600 to win 2100, yep the math works out so I call. Eli has QQ, John has jj. I wasn't 33%, I was closer to 45% post flop to catch the heart or the Ace! The turn and the river were blanks and I lost about half my stack. "Mic" went on to tell me what a horrible call it was but Mic is a jackass. Blinds were killing me in 3rd at 200/400 so I went all in KJ suited and lost when Eli's A9 offsuit held up. I am still not winning races here, but at least my slump of losing money has ended.

PokerStars A-Hoy

Bodog $5+.50 SNG. 3rd place. +$4.50
The guy in front of me knocked out #4 with AA, so I am in the money and he is SB, I am BB with A2. He limps, flop comes Axx, he bets, I raise all-in thinking what are the odds he has got the goods two hands in a row, and he turns over AK. A dumb raise, which I do sometimes when I make the money. Why raise all-in with A2? The only way he calls is if he has me beat... Could've saved my chips and battled for 1st or 2nd.

Bodog $6+.50 SNG Turbo. 9th place. -$6.50
I lost all but 10 chips early when I caught JJ and raised 300. One caller and an A hit on the flop. I should have bet small at that point and still had 600 left, but I spazzed and went all in in front of him trying to scare the guy off. Like I'm going to scare anyone off in a $6 SNG, even if they had A2 and I was trying to represent AK. Sure enough he had AJ. If I wanted to lose all my money with JJ, I should've gone all-in pre-flop when I was 70/30 instead of making a stupid bluff on a dangerous flop. I came back from 10 chips to 220 (6x and a 3x) and lost when I went All-In with J10 when the flop came 679. I figured 10 outs with a chance to triple up and get back in it was worth it since the blinds were about to go 50/100. At least I wasn't 10th.

Decided there is no reason to keep $200 on Bodog. Going to withdraw $100 and move it to Pokerstars.

Mondays at the Hoy (MATH)
My first ever real-money game on PokerStars was a $10+1 with 37 other experienced bloggers who generally play much higher stakes. I was respectable at 19/38. Blew whatever chance I had when I called an All-In pre-flop with AJ suited against AK. Busted out a while later with AK hearts, the board came 910K and of course the other guy flopped the nut straight. Oh well, it was fun. Went from there to take 2nd in an 18 player $6+50 Turbo so I made it back and then some. Lost 2 more after that so I finished the day dead even. Now I can always remember the horrendously bad beat I took after I spent 3 hours playing a 2000 person freeroll at Bodog. I don't usually play many freerolls anymore, but I was just passing the time while I setup this blog. Top 99 get paid and I'm sitting near the average with around 20,000 chips and 85 people left. So I've beaten 95% of the field and made a whopping $2.50!

The blinds are 600/1200 and antes 125 when I get red 88 in early position. I limped along with 2 others, nobody raised behind and the flop came Q83 - 2 clubs. The small blind bets, I raise the pot, he raises all-in and I of course call. He shows red pocket 3's, no possible straight or flush so I've got him dead to the case 3. His user name was "LiveDieOnRiver". Some people don't know how I came up with it, so here's the explanation. It is inspired by a System of a Down song. The lyrics are vulgar, and if you are not familiar with SOAD you might think that I am just a dirty person and want people to think I am well endowed... Maybe... but the song is really a tongue-in-check commentary on people who think they are "really big" and their "shit don't stink". I chose it because I think it is funny and it is good for my online table image. Plus, now I can use it as a clever name for my blog.

The big 2-9

While 2-9 is one heckuva hand, I'm talking about turning 29 in 2 weeks. I have been playing poker seriously for around 1 year and I suppose this is my motivation for starting a poker blog. 29 is going to be the year I go from learning to earning. I will use this blog to actually track what I am doing, whether I am making or losing money overall, lessons I learn from pivotal hands, general observations, and I'm sure a lot of nonsense.

Live Play
I try to play around once a week in a home game at "Jaysen's Poker Palace" (hereafter JPP). The buy-in is $10 with $5 re-buys. We'll have anywhere from 8-15 players and the payout is top 3 so roughly 50-30-20%. Of course, when I first started there last summer, I was never in the money. Then I started law school in the fall of 2005 and I couldn't play JPP as much, but I was still practicing online (but never during class, noooo way.) Then I went on a very good streak at JPP where I was in the money approximately 7/10 games. I know that I am in the top few players in the game, outlasting most of the calling stations with a shot for the money... but I have no idea where my live cash balance stands. I do know that I lost in a $40+$10 at The 101 Casino (a.k.a. the "Cow Shit Casino") in Petaluma, CA on a trip there last month. There were 86 players and I busted with 88 v. 77 when the 7 hit on the river. My cousin Gregg made it to the final table and we had a blast.

Online Play
I know that I am ahead online, because I know what I have deposited and I know what my balances are at a handful of sites. Of course my objective the past year has been to learn and not to make money. If I was trying to make money, I would say that over the hundreds of hours I have played that my average profit of about 10 cents/hour probably isn't worth it. However, I consider not losing any money in online poker to be an accomplishment, and now it is time to start thinking about money management and actually knowing how, when, and where I am most profitable. Here is the approximate online bankroll I will be starting with on my blogger mission:

Bodog -$190
I cleaned up for a while at Bodog on the $5+.50 and $6.50 (Turbo) SNG's. At one point I was up over $300 on my initial $50 deposit. I think I need to move some of this money to another site, but for now it is the only place where I am still playing $5+ SNG's.
Titan - $50
I put $50 on Titan to take advantage of a $25 deposit bonus. I also got a $25 friend referral from 23skidoo. He encouraged me to play it all on a .25/.50 table (I rarely play cash games) and an hour later I was up another $75. So why do I still only have $50? Don't ask. Do I know what I am still doing at Titan? No. Maybe I will figure it out or maybe I will consider the whole thing a wash and move it somewhere else.
Mansion - $12.50
I made the minimum $10 deposit to play in the "Poker Dome" freerolls and the $500 "1 cent" freerolls. You need to make the top 6 out of 600 in one of the freerolls to make the weekly Poker Dome qualifier. I have made it to around 30th a couple of times and also won $2.50 in one of the freerolls. As long as they continue having such manageable sized MTT's to take a stab at $500 or getting on TV, this is going to be my MTT practice ground.
UltimateBet - $10
This is the first site I deposited $25. I was up over $100 at one point and moved $50 to Bodog. Then I went on a good losing spree, playing too high of limits and goofing around and now I am going to see if I can make a comeback from a measly 10 bucks.

I don't think I am at the point where I am going to set any poker goals. Hell, I might not even keep up with this... If I do there is always New Years. The only goals now are to record, observe, learn, and improve...
